According to tripadvisor, the jewel of Plaza de Cibeles is the fountain. No offence, but running through busy traffic to get to the fountain isn’t my idea of fun. In any case, in the same plaza, I found Cibeles Palace (aka Palacio de Cibeles / Palace of Communication) far more interesting and safe to visit. This gorgeous building was free to visit! Free exhibitions, free wifi, free work desks, tons of comfy couches, panoramic city view…

By the way, Spain does get cold! Don’t know why people were telling me that Spain was all sun and warmth. It was COLD (between 0 – 5 degree Celcius). During my visit, part of the building was under restoration, so I didn’t get to see the famed panoramic view on the 8th floor 🙁 The restaurant was also closed. No matter, I was pretty happy getting lost in the building though. So much to see! Before I realised it, I spent a good 2 hours walking around inside the building. Here are some of my highlights.

Inside Cibeles Palace (Madrid), 1st floor lobby
1st floor lobby. On the sides, there were shelves of Spanish books.

I went up via the stairs because they looked so pretty. It was a very bad choice. I highly recommend taking the elevator. I was so dizzy after the spiral stairs.

Inside Cibeles Palace. Spiral stairs decorated with mosaic.
Inside Cibeles Palace (Madrid), contemporary art exhibition
5th floor exhibition. It was super dark, like I have no idea where I was going sort of dark. *LOL* I am so glad that this photo worked out. There were 3 exhibitions that were “dark room” style. Lovely to “see” or experience? This was the only one that I managed to capture. I am sorry that I am unable to provide the artist’s name. It is not intentional. The place was just too dark and I couldn’t find the artist’s name.
Inside Cibeles Palace (Madrid), work space
I forgot whether this was taken on the 4th or the 5th floor. The just of it is that there’re plenty of desks for anyone to do their own thing.

  1. Oh Wao. the pics were awesome. A beautiful architecture. And moreover my favorite football club is madrid. All over the post was awesome.

    • Thank you for the comment, Shreya. You’re a Madrid football team fan? Here you go then, it is the perfect spot for you to wait for the Cibeles plaza celebration 😉

  2. That photo of the staircase is so visually pleasing! I’m sorry you got dizzy though… 😆
I’ve never been to Spain and I can’t wait to visit to see all the interesting buildings!

    • Yes~~ 😀 Those stairs are beautiful and I was sucked in by them. They had “peep” windows too. Look at how high the ceilings are for each floor? What was I thinking? After 2 floors, I was totally disorientated. LOL
