This shrine is in the middle of a tropical forest with a sea view! Located in the middle of Devil’s washboard in Miyazaki, JapanIsn’t the entrance walk is a class act? Such a stunning setting!Inline with other shrines in Japan, they have lots of charms to offer. Some of their charms requires one to ‘work’ for them e.g. bow & arrow, dice, fishing etc. My hubby managed to win a ‘love’ charm via bow & arrow. Too bad for him, he already has me 😛This is literately the only ‘building’ on the island! And a tropical one too.
How is that for a walk to do some prayers? It’s a tropical forest / spiritual experience all at once. I love this place! There’s hardly anyone there as well. So tranquil 😀 Highly recommend visiting here!!
Where was I?
Aoshima Shrine 青島神社
2 Chome-13-1 Aoshima, Miyazaki, Miyazaki Prefecture 889-2162, Japan
How to get here?
From Miyazaki to Aoshima is 30min via JR Rail Nichinan Line. JPY 370 if you don’t have JR pass.
Between Aoshima train station to the island is around 15min by foot.

Hi Joyce! I love your blog!! It’s great!
Fascinating story and great images Joyce. Its amazing how the Japanese often work hard to clutter up their shrines and temples to make them as hazardous as possible
Wahahah I never thought of it that way. You’re right though, they do add a lot of ‘elements’ to the shrine experience.
This shrine looks pretty distinct from other ones I’ve been to. I really like the entrance! Your hubby looks amused by his charm! XD
He was a proud ‘bush man’. That bow and arrow was so basic *LOL*
I love that shrine and the whole atmosphere there! Loved the colourful bracelets tied around the tree, we focused on them writing a short article on this shrine. Nice to see your pictures of the whole complex, brings back memories 🙂
So glad to hear that you love it too!!! Such a special place ????
The only thing I can say is… you’re so lucky, Joyce 🙂

Thank you, Monica ???? I count my blessings ????

I love the tropical setting, so lush and green!
Exactly! I thought it was like a shrine in a “jungle” 😀
