This was part of a massage package. It all sounded very ‘safe’. My brother and I decided to try this exotic sounding package together. Setting knees on fire was only tip of the iceberg.
Boasting to be one of the oldest natural onsen in Japan. This gem is one of my favourite amongst the open air onsens (rotenburo). It is inexpensive and a stunning experience. Breath-taking unbreached sea view while bathing. Bath within 10m from the sea!!!
There is actually nothing to do in this town, which is why it is so fabulous. Quietness like you never know. Think uninterrupted coast line, zero traffic and peaceful sleep.
Konokayu 木の香湯, also known as Kugino Onsen 久木野温泉 was located in the southern Aso village. Quick 5min walk from where I stayed Little Asia guesthouse (previous post). It was such a great stop for the evening after hikes or a long day of walking around. This was not a mixed bath (men & women bath naked together; konyu 混湯 Konyoyu). There will be a separate post on the infamous mix bath Sukayu 酸ヶ湯, ‘1000 people’ bath; which I went via hitch hiking. Another story another time.

Think lake, zen garden, bridge, koi fish, bonzai, boxed grown trees, Japanese tea house overseeing the lake… This beauty was categorised as National Special Scenic Beauty, it was the largest one in Japan. Unlike most 3 star destinations, this one was NOT crowded at all; as you can see from my photos, there was hardly anyone. Been there in autumn and summer time… no body LOL. The tea houes, Kikugetsu-tei, served traditional Japanese sweet and green tea (no reservation required). Kikugetsu-tei also served
Surprise find, Day Plus Teascape 茶样子 boutique hotel in Chiayi – I spent 30% of my time in their tea bath (in the room); as oppose to my 90% commitment to sleeping like a pig.
