Accommodation prices on Miyajima are well known to be unforgiving, so are ryokans. Introducing my proud affordable find, Sakuraya Ryokan. The location was SOOOO good. It was 5min walk from the ferry dock and 10min walk to the alluring Itsukushima Jinja 厳島神社, 宮島. Cannot be happier.
This garden is another member of 日本三名園 Nihon Sanmeien, Three Great Gardens of Japan. The other 2 gardens are: Kairakuen of Mito and Kenrokuen of Kanazawa. Unlike my epic weather failed Kairakuen visit, this time, it was only cloudy and did not rain. LOL Celebration! haha
Welcome to Yura, aka Conan stop! Located in 北栄町, Hokuei-chō. Another themed up JR stop in the Tottori prefecture. Prepared to do THE Conan manga pilgrimage…
If there’s ANY toy that you miss from the 1950s, one will likely find their child time favourites in this humble museum. Their collection was simply amazing. Cassettes, VHS, courtyard games… nothing was too retro for this place.
A new meaning to ‘sand castles’. These gigantic pieces of art were made of sand and water. Sharing photos of the jaw dropping works of art.
Photo gallery post…
This started off as a travel blunder… we arrived off peak and when the whole avenue (feature of the town) was closed. It was my fault, we finished with Conan museum early and I thought we could squeeze it in. So typical of me. For Japan, I really do tend to arrive first and think later. Most of the time it works like a charm. There’s so much information pamphlet locally that it has never been necessary.
The whole town is themed up to the spooky comedy manga, Gegege no Kitaro (ゲゲゲの鬼太郎). This manga series is a Japanese classic from the 1960s, drawn by Mr Shigeru Mizuki. The story line is based on a collection of Japanese folklore and local superstitions. It essentially gained cult status and hence the crazy town & train line for this manga. Yup, the manga fixtures are all PERMANENT.
The theme runs strong from the moment I set foot onto the Yonago train platform…
big load of photos alert
Matsuejo is an original remaining castle. It has never faced any battle and hence only had minor repairs. It is the only remaining castle in the Sanin region. Japan castle ranking? 2nd largest in size and 3rd tallest amongst the other 11 remaining castles of Japan (**exclude all the replica / rebuilt).
Nickname: Black Castle or Plover Castle
